We love your birds, but please don't bring them to our meetings. We usually have a bird of the month already attending. Thanks!

Leroy Brown, Lovebird

By Amber O'Neill, Bird Sitter

Leroy Brown is a peachfaced lovebird currently under the care of Amber O'Neill. Leroy's owner, Joel, is a journeyman lineman who had to leave state for work for six months. Initially, Joel called Amber to see about placing Leroy through the Adopt-a-Bird program. As soon as Amber saw how much Leroy loved Joel (he was regurgitating for him and everything!), Amber offered to bird-sit while Joel was out of state, and he agreed. Leroy moved in with Amber after he went to the vet to get tested for all the applicable diseases, to keep Amber's own birds safe.

Joel adopted Leroy from someone else, so no one really knows how old he is or exactly where he comes from.

Leroy is, in Amber's estimation, the sweetest lovebird on earth. Whereas lovebirds tend to be... well, "bossy" and "insistent" would be a polite way to put it, Leroy steps up nicely and even lets people manhandle him without getting cranky. He loves safflower seeds and preening inside ears. Each morning he greets the sun with a barrage of squeakiness. Over the months, he has developed a hilarious way of trying to imitate the resident Amazon’s yell in his tiny high-pitched voice. It sort of sounds as though he's being strangled, to tell you the truth, but it's very cute.

Amber is very careful to supervise Leroy when he's out, with the other birds or alone, as lovebirds tend to get into mischief.
