The Vice-President's Perch
August 2008
Archive

Our President this month is visiting her flock at The Oasis. She almost left early due to an injury to Missy’s bottom jaw beak. Both Missy and Winston are in foster care currently and Leanna will visit them prior to heading onto the Oasis to visit the rest of the flock.

Our club would like to thank the many volunteers for their recent efforts helping owners and their birds. There are times when health of an owner forces an issue of what to do with pets. Recently we received a frantic call from a young lady concerning her father who lived in Interior Alaska in one of the remote villages. He was living there with his dog and over 30 cockatiels. His children opted to move the birds to Anchorage to be closer to their owner and thanks to the efforts of many, the Adopt-A-Bird committee helped these folks in a desperate situation. Not having enough large flight style cages and having very limited time and resources, Ann G., David M. and Lin W, set out to build a wonderful cage to temporarily house these birds while determining what the outcome of these birds would be.

Part of the flock is housed in Anchorage with Marta M. while the reminder is housed with Donna J. in Wasilla. Also a special thanks to all the folks who read about our unusual plight in an email sent to members and foster people by Lin W Many folks came through and donated toys, food, and dishes. Following is a list of items from people who assisted with this process: Dee P. donated the loan of a cage which was refurbished by Cindy W., Cindy W also cleaned and refurbished the last of the beauty shop cages still at Kathy O’s place, A friend of Amber’s donated food, Susan V donated toys and food.

David and Susan A. donated toys, and through the Pet Zoo Rescue Program where our volunteers spend one day a month; food and dishes.

Assisting Cindy W. and the owner’s children were Marta M., Diane O., Kathy O., Marta’s son, the man’s children and a friend of theirs. If anyone was not mentioned, please accept our thanks and read the Adopt-A-Bird Program article written by Cindy W. and in the August Newsletter.

We are seeking volunteers to assist in many areas as we loose members to moving and other life style changes. David and Susan A are leaving multiple positions open and available for volunteers to fill. The position of Secretary, Member-At-Large, Hospitality, Membership, Pet Zoo, Fund Raising Table, and making the baskets each month for fund raising. Diane O is leaving as well and she fills a place with the Adopt-A-Bird Program as an ative participant in doing home inspections and assisting with placing birds into new homes.

There is always something for people to do! There are so many functions that are completed with people not realizing they are accomplished or completed.

We are seeking volunteers to assist in many areas as we loose members who are moving out of state. Become an active part of The Alaska Bird Club.

Diane O. also helps deliver newsletters each month to at least six locations. Volunteers are also needed for delivering newsletters every month.

Contact your President, Leanna Rein, or your Vice President, Lin Westgard to let them know where you are interested in helping out.

If you are interested in the Adopt-A-Bird Program, please contact Cindy Welbourne and let her know.

And finally, enjoy these photos of a parrot flower submitted by Kris P and reprinted with permission via e-mail from Debbie R.
